Canada govt. may suspend entry of international students to Ontario province to combat COVID surge

All International students are currently exempted from Canada's COVID-19 travel rules. All students must be able to provide a valid study visa/permit or a letter of introduction that shows they were approved for a permit.

HOW IS CANADA PREPARING FOR STUDENTS ABOUT TO ENTER ONTARIO PROVINCE?

Canada is preparing to ban/temporarily stop entry of international students from India, to Ontario, the most-hit province which is struggling from the third wave of the corona virus. According to the Canadian Bureau for International Education, an institution/education service provider based in Ottawa-Ontario, a total of 530,540 international students were enrolled in Canada in 2020, of which the maximum were from India (34 per cent) followed by China (22 per cent).

Ontario has the maximum number of foreign students at 242,825 or 46 per cent, it said.

During a recent press conference on Friday 30th April 2021, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that the government is considering a brief halt on the arrival of international students coming to Ontario, to combat the spread of the corona virus pandemic

The province of Ontario is the only province to request it, Prime Minister Trudeau said “they will be reaching out to their officials” to formalize the request. However, there is no such confirmation or clarity as yet on when this change may take effect or how long it will last for international students.

Currently, international students are exempt from Canada’s COVID-19 travel rules. All students must be able to provide a valid study permit or a letter of introduction that shows they were approved for a permit, according to CTV news.

Doug Ford has requested the federal government to ban non-essential travel after 36 cases of the B.1.617 variant, originally found in India, were identified in the province, the report said.

Canada has so far reported 1.22 million coronavirus cases, including 463,000 in Ontario. Of the total 24,219 fatalities, 8,050 were reported from Ontario.

WHAT DO WE ADVICE?

Transformers Immigration and Education advise students to adopt a proactive approach and advice all students to regularly check for updates on Canadian government website cic.gc.ca to know more about rules for entry in Canada as a student. As of now, however nothing is clearly being dictated but there are chances that there will be a closure of international travels for a short span of time in order to control the situation.

Currently our country has also imposed restriction on working of all private offices till 15th May so that we as a nation are able to break the chain and come out as a winner in stopping the second and third wave of corona virus any further.

We suggest each and everyone to stay at home and to follow all precautionary measures as guided by the government until further notice. Our wisdom and action is the only thing standing in front of the spread. We encourage all students to approach their respective agencies and take updates regarding travel and entry restrictions and to share the updates with the VAC centers to inform about any deadlines, if they are about to miss due to the lockdown.

Though Canadian institutions are still accepting applications for September 2021 Intakes, one must be very fast in submitting documents before timelines to avoid any chaos in their processing of the application.

We wish everyone good health..
