Understanding your Skill Level:

All professions are termed as National Occupation classification (NOC) code under Canadian Immigration. A NOC code is a 4 digit code that is sub divided under various skill levels namely: Skill level ‘O’, A, B C and D.

NOC codes are used by Canadian Government to organize and describe the occupations and are used to identify a job role and accordingly lay down the description by way of which a selection for a profile could be done. The Canadian Government uses the NOC code to identify the shortages and demand in the Canadian job market.

A skill level means the type of training, education required to work in a particular occupation. In order to judge the level, the second digit of the NOC code symbolizes the category

For Skill Level O - NOC code beginning from the digit ‘0’. If the second digit is even 0, then it represents senior management. This occupation level contains legislators and senior management occupations as well as specialized, middle and other management occupations. The other 9 broad categories are represented by the first digit of the NOC code as below:-

1- Business, finance and administration occupations.

2- Natural and applied sciences and related occupations.

3- Health science related occupations.

4- Occupation in education, law and social, community and government services.

5- Occupation in art, culture, recreation and sport.

6- Sales and service related occupations.

7- Trades, transport and equipment operators and related occupations.

8- Natural resources, agriculture and related production occupation.

9- Occupation in manufacturing and utilities.

For Skill Level A- the occupation usually requires a university Bachelor’s, master’s or PHD level education. The second digit of the four digit NOC code will either be 0 or 1.

For Skill Level B- the occupation usually required a college level education, any specialized training or apprenticeship training. The second digit of the NOC code will be either 2 or 3. Hence a minim or either 2 or 3 year post secondary education at some community college or 2-5 years of apprenticeship will be required to qualify.

For Skill level C- the occupation usually requires a Secondary school level education or an occupation based specific diploma or training.  The second digit of such NOC codes will be either 4 or 5.  A minimum of 2 years on-the-job training or specific work experience will be required.
